How to score wides, no-balls, byes and leg-byes

Quick MatchFull Match

Tap the extra (wd, nb, lb or b) in the EXTRAS row, add any runs that were also run, then confirm. Wides and no-balls are re-bowled and add a penalty run; byes and leg-byes are legal balls that count toward the over.

Step by step

  1. 1

    Tap the extra

wd for a wide, nb for a no-ball, lb for a leg-bye, b for a bye. It highlights in its own colour.

    Tap the extra
  2. 2

Add any runs that were run

Tap the number if the batters also ran, or the ball went to the boundary. Leave it if they didn't.

  3. 3

    Confirm with NEXT BALL

The extras and any runs are recorded together.

What each one does

  • Wide (wd) — penalty run to the batting side, re-bowled, and not a ball faced by the batter.
  • No-ball (nb) — penalty run, re-bowled, and it triggers a free hit. It does count as a ball faced.
  • Leg-bye (lb) — a legal ball that counts toward the over. Runs go to the team, not the batter.
  • Bye (b) — same, for a ball that beat everyone including the keeper.
Byes and leg-byes only exist if the batters actually ran, so scoring one with zero runs is simply a dot ball — the app treats it that way automatically.

Who the runs belong to

This is where most scorebooks go wrong. Byes and leg-byes count to the team total but never to the batter's runs. Runs hit off a no-ball do belong to the batter. The app applies these rules for you, so the scorecard adds up.

And to the bowler

Wides and no-balls are charged to the bowler's figures. Byes and leg-byes are not — they were not the bowler's fault.

Playing tape-ball rules where extras don't cost runs? Turn on No runs for wides & no-balls in Gully Rules — the ball is still re-bowled, but no penalty run is added.

People also ask

What is the difference between a bye and a leg bye?

A bye is scored when the ball passes the batter and the keeper without touching either. A leg bye comes off the batter's body, not the bat. Both count to the team total, never to the batter's runs.

Does a wide count as a ball faced by the batsman?

No. A wide is not a ball faced, so it never appears in the batter's balls column — though it is charged to the bowler.

Do byes count against the bowler in cricket?

No. Byes and leg-byes are not charged to the bowler's figures, because they were not the bowler's fault. Wides and no-balls are.

How do you score a no ball in cricket?

One penalty run to the batting side, the ball is re-bowled, and it does count as a ball faced. Runs hit off it belong to the batter, and it triggers a free hit if you play them.
