How it runs
- The match finishes level.
- The team that batted second picks three batters and one bowler, and bats first.
- The other team gets one over to beat that score.
- More runs wins. Level again? Play another one, with the batting order of the two teams swapped.
The one everyone remembers
The 2019 World Cup final between England and New Zealand finished level after fifty overs each, then level again after the super over. England won on boundary count, a lot of people felt terrible about it, and within months the rule changed. Now a tied super over just means another super over.
Super overs in gully cricket
A super over needs light, three batters who are still keen, and somebody brave enough to bowl the most important over of the evening. At seven o'clock in a colony that's a big ask, which is why most gullies reach for the bowl out instead. When you do play one, play it straight: two wickets is two wickets, whatever your last man standing rule says for the main innings.
